We make much of Love—
A hospital visit, a shared ride,
A neighborhood barbeque.
But if you’re down on your luck,
Tough love takes control
And decides what’s best for you.
Truth between friends
Binds heart to heart
And gives a warm embrace.
But drawn from creed and dogma,
Truth says, “Chapter and verse,
Or you’re out of the club.”
Justice stands up to a bully,
Makes sure the little one gets a turn,
Knows there are always two sides.
But in court, justice stares you down
And pronounces judgment:
“You should have read the fine print.”
Love, Truth, and Justice—
From within: unrivaled gems,
Pearls of great price.
From without: they take control,
Build walls, haul you into court,
And rob you of your humanity.
